Mexcaltitán is an island located off the coast of Nayarit, in the municipality of Santiago Ixcuintla.

According to several theories, Mexcaltitán could have been the inspiration for the mythical Aztlán due to its geographical location, the structure of the island and its proximity to ancient migration routes.

Although there is no definitive proof to confirm this relationship, the idea has captured the imagination of archaeologists and tourists alike.

Research and excavations on the island have revealed archaeological remains that suggest the area was inhabited since pre-Hispanic times. In addition, Mexcaltitán was an important point in the Commercial route that connected different regions of the Pacific coast.

Culture and traditions

The inhabitants of Mexcaltitán have preserved many of the ancient customs and traditions that give the island a timeless feel. One of the most important celebrations is the Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, patron saints of fishermen, celebrated every June 29.
