Cancun renovates its cathedral: A new destination for religious tourism

Cancún, a tourist destination known for its beaches and nightlife, is taking a significant step towards promoting religious tourism by renovating its cathedral.

This project seeks not only to revitalize an important spiritual site, but also to attract visitors interested in religious and cultural experiences.

The remodeling of the Cancun Cathedral will begin with an investment of 90 million pesos (approximately $4.5 million).

That amount will be allocated to three stages of construction, each with a budget of 30 million pesos.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to open in December 2025, and is expected to be a significant event to be attended by invite Pope Francis.

The main objective of the renovation is to strengthen religious and spiritual tourism in the region.

Local authorities have highlighted the importance of this type of tourism, which can complement the traditional tourist offerings of Cancun, attracting a new segment of visitors seeking deeper, more meaningful experiences. 

Ana Paty Peralta, representative of the municipal government, expressed his support for this initiative, noting that the cathedral will not only serve as a place of worship, but also as a tourist attraction that will enrich the cultural and spiritual offering of the destination.

“With the remodeling of the Cathedral and the construction of the Community Center, spaces will be created where love, peace and harmony are promoted, fundamental values ​​to strengthen our families and rebuild the social fabric,” he said. Peralta  during his speech at this ceremony marking the start of works.

He indicated that this work, in the heart of the Ombligo Verde, a beloved and emblematic place of the city, not only commemorates the 25 years of the Cathedral, but will transform it into a true center for the community.

For its part, Mara Lezama, governor of the state, He said he was happy to witness the start of the work. He asked not to lose the human and spiritual values ​​that contribute to the common good.

In turn, the Bishop of the Cancun – Chetumal Diocese, Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo, He stated the following:

“Those who build with love, dignify for eternity.”

The bishop commented that the Cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Cross, which will have a monumental atrial cross 25 meters high, planted on a Mayan pyramid to remember the arrival of the Christianity to Mexican lands in 1518 on the island of Cozumel.
